A Generation Ago “Happening”.
It was on this day in 1969 that the curtain closed on the biggest and original outdoor music festival. An estimated audience of five hundred thousand young and old hippies, potheads and peaceniks descended on Max Yasgur’s Woodstock farm for a musical event like no other. An historical “Three Days of Peace and Music” kicked off with folk singer and guitarist Richie Havens, followed by the who’s who and the about to become who’s who of the musical entertainment industry of the era, culminating with a closing set by Jimi Hendrix who blew everyone away with his distorted and screaming upside down Fender Stratocaster performing an improvised solo guitar performance of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
What a climax!
